Easily Transform Your Winter Blues into Winter Joy!

hibernate

Bears do it.

Koi fish do it.

So do frogs, squirrels, and several other animals. So why should you allow yourself to feel bad when you feel it’s effects? What I’m talking about here is hibernation.

Of course, humans don’t hibernate fully, but when the cold and short days of winter come around, many of us feel a physical change. We may want to sleep more. We may want to eat more. We may want to be less active and leave our home less frequently. I had a revelation about this recently. Since this is totally normal and most everyone experiences it, then there is absolutely no reason to feel bad about it!

The way to transform your winter blues is simple. Reconsider these winter changes from a new perspective. Here’s how:

How to Become a Runner: A Simple Method for Beginners

Beginning Runner

I used to be a runner back in high school and college and then I got busy with career, living life, and starting a family. In recent years I was dedicated to brisk walking most days of the week, and sometimes I would even jog a little. But I was never able to get back into running.

Until recently. I made one simple change and it has made the difference between being a walker and, now, being a runner. (Well, jogger, at least!:) Continue Reading →

A Fun Break Involving Small Children

child yoga

I’ve been watching my 2 year old niece over the last few days while my sister is recovering from giving birth. My niece and my 4 year old son play very nicely together, but at the end of the day I still get a little tired. And on Friday I discovered a great break you can take that involves the kids. So even if you don’t have kids, bookmark this for the next time you have babysitting duty!

The Young Kiddie Yoga Massage Break

Here’s what you do:

1. Stretching. Invite the kids over to join you in some simple stretches on the floor. Show them different stretches and say “Can you do this too?” And then give lots of praise. Do this for 5 minutes or as long as they’ll play along. Try toe touches, child pose, downward dog, upward dog, cat/dog tilts, torso twisting, and arm movements.

2. Play. Next let the kids lead the way with fun stuff like crawling under you, rolling, light wrestling, and lots of laughing. 5-10 minutes.

3. Kiddie Crawling Massage. You lie down on your stomach and invite the kids to walk or crawl all over you. You can rest your eyes while they do this. They will most likely love this opportunity to do something so silly as walk on a grownup. And here’s the best part, you get a little eye rest and a free massage! Feel free to incorporate lots of laughing, sound effects, and even music too.

4. Disclaimer: I’ve only tried this will small kids under 5 years old. Not sure if it would work with older kids, but you can try. Let the kiddies know the ground rules like no pushing, jumping, or walking on your head! 🙂 Be sure that there is nothing they can hurt themselves on if they fall while walking on your back. Crawling is probably the safest way to do it.

Enjoy!

Fluid Yoga, Fluid Power

Review: Shiva Rea Fluid Power: Vinyasa Flow Yoga

I was fortunate to try this new yoga DVD recently. I loved it so much, I want to share with you a review of this remarkable yoga DVD.

I’m a big fan of yoga beacuase of the total body and mind conditioning it gives you. And I’m a big fan of yogini Shiva Rea. Her yoga videos give you everything you could want:

  • Inspired, organic, and unique yoga instruction.
  • Background music that fits well with each portion of the practice from invigorating to meditative.
  • Easy to use matrix that allows you to create your own custom practice.
  • Preset practices for when you don’t want to make choices.
  • Beautiful scenery and inspiring demonstration of the poses.
  • Many extras including interviews and education.

Shiva Rea Fluid Power – the DVD

Shiva Rea’s latest DVD, Fluid Power, creates a wonderful follow up to her other 2 sensational yoga DVD’s, Yoga Shakti and Yoga Trance Dance. Fluid Power is a creative yoga DVD that celebrates and honors the fluid wave motion of our bodies and of our world. Shiva presents her yoga practices in vinyasa form which is a series of yoga poses that flow together.

There are over 3 hours of yoga sequences to choose from when creating your custom practice or choosing from the 6 preset practices. The matrix system that allows you to do this on your DVD player is very easy to use. The DVD comes with a beautiful booklet that describes each sequence and guides you in how you might want to structure your practice. If you want super easy, just choose from one of the 6 preset practices that vary in both length and level of intensity, from purely meditative to advanced.

What I really like about this video is how it combines creativity of motion, meditative poses, and also challenging poses that leave you feeling not only stronger and more flexible, but also like you tapped into a whole new part of your being, getting in touch with your fluid self. I found that this was very relaxing even while gently challenging. It is truly unlike any other yoga video I’ve ever seen. I would say that it falls somewhere between Yoga Shakti, which is quite challenging and Yoga Trance Dance which is highly creative. Fluid Power combines the best essences of these two DVD’s giving you creative yoga that lets you explore, while at the same time providing structure that is comforting.

This video is for beginners with some experience all the way up to advanced yoga students. If you want a Shiva Rea yoga that has it all, this is the one to buy. I have all 3 of her top videos and since each one is unique, I can recommend owning all 3. Below is a list of some of her popular videos. Which is your favorite?

Building a Smarter, Stronger Brain – Part 2

improve your brain

Building a Smarter, Stronger Brain – Part 2

Part 1 of this series introduced you to the parts of your brain, how your brain computes, and also how your brain improves. Finally, 3 types of brain workouts you can use to improve your brain were presented. Today Part 2 brings you 3 more brain workouts for you to enjoy as you stretch your brain “muscles.”

Brain Workout #1 – Memory

Create your to-do list for today or tomorrow on a piece of paper or index card. Only write down 6 items on it. Only write down items that you will actually do (tasks, appointments, leisure events.) In other words don’t write down more than is actually possible. Next to each task write down the approximate time you expect to do each item. Read it over and memorize it. Put the paper in your pocket. Go about your day and complete your task list. Each time you complete something write down on a new piece of paper the time and task as you remember writing down on the original list. At the end of the day, compare the two lists to see how you did. You may even want to turn this into a daily habit for working your memory by increasing the complexity by one item each day!

Brain Workout #2 – Drawing + Goals

Think of a goal. It can be a big goal such as starting your own business or it can be a small goal like going to the grocery store this afternoon. Draw the major steps you will take to reach that goal. Use as few words as possible in the picture. If it is for an important goal such as starting a business or losing weight, you can hang the picture somewhere that you will see it every day! Here is a picture of my goal for the weekend: traveling to a friend’s wedding and our safe return.

Brain Workout #3 – Day Dreaming

Set aside at least 30 minutes. Find a comfortable, safe, and quiet place to sit. Close your eyes and imagine a goal that you want to achieve. Picture all the steps that you need to take to reach that goal. Imagine accomplishing all of those steps in a steady and successful progression over time. Imagine reaching your goal. How will that feel? What will it look like? Sound, feel, and taste? Use the full 30 minutes. Now when you “awake” from this day dream instead of merely remembering it like a dream, be the person who has reached that goal today. Do this every once in a while to build confidence, grow enthusiasm, and create energy for implementing your action plan steps day by day.
