Ultrametabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss” by Dr. Mark Hyman

If you are looking for the complete package on losing weight in a healthy manner, this is a book you should definitely check out. It is much more complete than the average diet book. In fact it’s more of a healthy living book. I like books that explain the science behind why things work. This book does just that. The writing is flows very fast probably because he makes the subject so interesting.

Ultrametabolism” is written by Dr. Mark Hyman, who was featured recently on 60 minutes for his volunteer medical work he is doing in Haiti since the earthquake. He has many other books and audiobooks on health, stress, and the mind.

Ultrametabolism is divided into three sections:

Part 1: The 7 Myths That Make You Gain Weight

Here Dr. Hyman reveals all the false beliefs we have about weight loss with solid scientific evidence. It will have you saying “Aha, well that makes sense now.” Things such as “The Starvation Myth,” “All Calories are Equal Myth,” “The (Eating)Fat makes you Fat Myth,” and more are brought into the light for examination.

Part 2: The 7 Keys to the New Science of Weight Loss: The Owner’s Manual for Your Body

In this section Dr. Hyman describes how to increase your metabolism, control your appetite, subdue stress, reduce inflammation, use exercise for boosting metabolic power, and how to detoxify your body.  Again this section is extremely interesting, highly readable, and way more valuable than the price of the book. He teaches you how to live your life to have the healthiest body possible. A healthy weight is a natural by-product of this.

Part 3: The Ultrametabolism Prescription

This is where the instructions of how to implement this information are detailed out for you. Many topics are covered: whole-foods recipes, setting up your kitchen for success, how to avoid common pitfalls along the way, which supplements are good and why, details on detoxification, and more.

There are several appendices, resource lists, and conclusions at the end. And if you are looking for more there is also a corresponding cookbook: “The UltraMetabolism Cookbook: 200 Delicious Recipes that Will Turn on Your Fat-Burning DNA.”

The Bottom Line

These days I read so many books that I always check them out from the library first. The ones that I love and that are truly valuable I buy them. “Ultrametabolism“is one I am buying. I think reading it once a year is probably a good review.

    This Ultrametabolism caught my attention. It is after all a great post. When talking about weight in general it is very true that the whole thing boils down to metabolism. Weight gaining of losing, both revolves with the metabolic rate of an individual. So it is very important to take note of an individuals metabolic rate and know how to compliment it for you to achieve your goals.

    At first I thought that it’s just another diet fad book like the ones I already have in my fatloss lib. But based on the details you have provided, this book does so much more than just prescribe another means to cut fat and shed weight. I’m surely gonna look out for this one in my fave bookstore.

    Sounds like a great lifestyle book. I designed some programs based around much of the same for women over 40 who were looking for a lifestyle instead of a crash diet.

    Id be interested to see how the two would compare.

    one of my friends eats alot more than me and does no exercise. i eat less, have a physical job and play sports and weigh 2 stone more than him. i used to think metabolism was all rubbish but obviously not!

    Honestly, I do believe on weight loss techniques. But it doesn’t mean that you can’t design your own weight loss plan. It’s just a matter of your willingness to loss weight. Would like to check the Ultrametabolism.

    I’m interested in losing weight as part of an overall sustainable lifestyle rather than just a quick short-term thing that is a chore to keep up with. I think making healthy eating part of an overall way of life is the key to long-term health and a healthy weight.

    I’m so glad to see someone recommending this book! When I got through this book I just tried to take it easy, chipping away at the changes in my nutrition slowly one step at a time. I’ve lost a considerable amount of weight (around 40lbs) since then, and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone!
