Ultrametabolism by Dr. Mark Hyman

Ultrametabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss“ by Dr. Mark Hyman

If you are looking for the complete package on losing weight in a healthy manner, this is a book you should definitely check out. It is much more complete than the average diet book. In fact it’s more of a healthy living book. I like books that explain the science behind why things work. This book does just that. The writing is flows very fast probably because he makes the subject so interesting.

Ultrametabolism” is written by Dr. Mark Hyman, who was featured recently on 60 minutes for his volunteer medical work he is doing in Haiti since the earthquake. He has many other books and audiobooks on health, stress, and the mind.

Ultrametabolism is divided into three sections:

Part 1: The 7 Myths That Make You Gain Weight

Here Dr. Hyman reveals all the false beliefs we have about weight loss with solid scientific evidence. It will have you saying “Aha, well that makes sense now.” Things such as “The Starvation Myth,” “All Calories are Equal Myth,” “The (Eating)Fat makes you Fat Myth,” and more are brought into the light for examination.

Part 2: The 7 Keys to the New Science of Weight Loss: The Owner’s Manual for Your Body

In this section Dr. Hyman describes how to increase your metabolism, control your appetite, subdue stress, reduce inflammation, use exercise for boosting metabolic power, and how to detoxify your body.  Again this section is extremely interesting, highly readable, and way more valuable than the price of the book. He teaches you how to live your life to have the healthiest body possible. A healthy weight is a natural by-product of this.

Part 3: The Ultrametabolism Prescription

This is where the instructions of how to implement this information are detailed out for you. Many topics are covered: whole-foods recipes, setting up your kitchen for success, how to avoid common pitfalls along the way, which supplements are good and why, details on detoxification, and more.

There are several appendices, resource lists, and conclusions at the end. And if you are looking for more there is also a corresponding cookbook: “The UltraMetabolism Cookbook: 200 Delicious Recipes that Will Turn on Your Fat-Burning DNA.”

The Bottom Line

These days I read so many books that I always check them out from the library first. The ones that I love and that are truly valuable I buy them. “Ultrametabolism“is one I am buying. I think reading it once a year is probably a good review.

I know out of experience that this is a pretty good book. I like how the book coveres the 3 steps, first giving info about bad habit and common things that are actually not true. Then giving the info about how you should eat.
And in the end, give the solution. I have read several books about dieting, but this one pretty much covers it all and it’s easy and interesting to read.
    Thanks for sharing this post.

I would read that book if I had enough time. But we should keep in mind that losing weight is probably the most complicated thing that a man can have. There were thousands of examples where people who lost 10 pounds gain 20 even faster. It is all in our mind.

This Ultrametabolism caught my attention. It is after all a great post. When talking about weight in general it is very true that the whole thing boils down to metabolism. Weight gaining of losing, both revolves with the metabolic rate of an individual. So it is very important to take note of an individuals metabolic rate and know how to compliment it for you to achieve your goals.

Sorry, but I am a bit skeptical about all weight loss systems and workouts.

In my opinion, key is in the Lifestyle.

It cannot be fixed by any system.

Probably starts with proper work conditions: less stress, more natural activities, no rush in the morning.

Once it is set – pay attention to how you rest.

Then food plays a role: just try not to overeat, eliminate processed food, learn to cook and enjoy your kitchen.

The last is how you eat: no TV, artful catering, nice talk at the table.

All above will keep you healthy and happy..

If you can put this into practice, you WILL see results. To get any great result with your weight loss, you do need to do work and this is a helpful tool in that area. It opens your eyes to ways to lift your metabolism that you may not have thought of before or known about – but now that you do, you can start to change. While it’s ultimately aiming at a ‘diet’ it’s focusing on raising your metabolism which helps you burn calories at a high rate – so not only will you loose weight from eating the right foods etc, but the weight lose will happen faster and in a more healthy way because your metabolism is now boosted and is working for you even when you are resting. Not that I have much to loose, but I’ve tried this now for one week and have noticed a big difference not only in my physical appearance but in my day to day health (with a weight loss of 8lbs already). I’m not as reliant on Coca Cola to give me my caffiene fix and I’m sleeping better at night.

Losing weight can be a difficult task for anyone even if you just want to lose a few pounds. There are many fad diets that can help you drop a dress size in 30 days but they are often unhealthy. The best way to lose weight in a short time is to develop goals and stick to them.

I find it odd that overweight people keep looking for the weight loss solution. STOP EATING JUNK and EXERCISE that’s it! No surprise here but its true and works. Problem is working out and eating right takes time and most people are over booked as it is. If your not willing to put forth the effort then save your time and money. Reading a book isn’t going to shed those pounds.

This book sounds like it may be a very good read! One of the main things people lose sight of is a diet is not about depriving yourself or feeding yourself all kinds of diet pills. This in fact only does more damage than good. A good diet is a lifestyle change and something that overtime will not feel like a diet at all once you get used to it. It is all of this starving ourselves and over the counter supplements that is causing everyone to mess up their metabolism, burn out and later gain more weight than what they started with. You must eat to lose weight and eat often, just learn how to eat the right things. Good Luck!

People eat too much or fattening foods because of a need to fill a gap somewhere. It feels good. It is nurturing. It’s a companion. Usually dieting creates a slower metabolism, and there is even less weight loss.
Yes, exercise and “right” foods are part of the formula, but unless the reasons for eating out of balance are released, the resistaance will remain and the weight will never stay off.

I was recently diagnosed as lactose intolerant and a sufferer of Coeliac disease, which means I can’t consume anything containing milk, wheat or gluten. Some people see this as a total restriction on life but I see it as an absolute godsend because I know that I can’t eat fast food and calorie-laden foods, such as cheese, so I don’t! This has absolutely helped me to get over my cravings and stay on track with healthy eating.
